Summer News from Devon
sue side
I hope this finds you well, despite the very wet summer we’re having. After a very promising June in Devon, the rain has been a pretty constant companion. We remain under drought restrictions but I’m not quite sure why!!
Despite the wet weather, we continue to make the most of our new surroundings. It’s certainly a green and verdant landscape and the views remain a delight. Our garden is proving to be a rich source of flora and fauna. We have apples, pears, plums and wild blackberries, as well as an enormous fig tree
Frogs like our land as do slow worms and shrews. Field mice often make a dash for it in the early morning and in the evening air is full of swift and swallow song as they wheel overhead.
Art life remains busy with commission deadlines keeping me on track and a busy autumn schedule to plan for. Plans for the studio are (slowly) moving ahead so it becomes a light exhibition space. It’s a great to focus on my art and the views are wonderful. New tree drawings and inkworks are emerging as I get ready for the shows listed below.
Commissions have brought wonderful new challenges which have been largely textile in nature. Lace, paisley silk, and broderie anglaise to name a few. It keeps my brain thinking and challenges my pencil. I can’t complain!
I’m also working on a series of murmurations commissioned by The Dolphin Gallery in Wantage.
If you are thinking of commissioning me, there are a couple of openings over winter and then you are looking at next summer. Do get in touch, so you aren’t disappointed!
New line of small works
Exclusive to my mailing list friends (time to subscribe!) during the month of November, and before our winter show in Bampton, you will have a chance to buy small originals based on wisteria through the seasons and new beach murmurations.
I will also be launching a new art print postcard box (the perfect Christmas gift) for the November show.
So what’s coming up?
Do have a look at the exhibition page for details of events
In the meantime, do get in touch if you wish to discuss a commission or enjoy browsing originals, prints and cards in the shop.
With very best wishes for a sunny end to summer!

New Year, New Beginnings
I hope this finds you well and looking forward to 2022.
I thought it was about time I shared some Sue Side updates with you. So here goes…
2021 had its challenges (true for us all!) but it also brought me some unexpected and exciting opportunities which helped me reset, take stock and look forward.
I was selected for two different international exhibitions at The Mall Galleries in London
with The Society of British Artists & The Society of Graphic Fine Art
What a boost that was! I felt very honoured to be there..twice!
I also had work selected for The Oxford Art Society, the fantastic new Rona Painting Gallery in Jericho, Oxford and recently I have been asked to show work with the established, highly esteemed Iona Gallery in Woodstock.
Now an Associate member of the Society of Graphic Fine Arts
A definite high point was being elected to The Society of Graphic Fine Arts. Only a few artists are invited each year and I was blown away to be one of them.
All this, plus studio shows in the Spring and Autumn, made 2021 surprisingly busy.
In fact, so much so, I have now decided to brave it as a full-time artist. Leaving teaching was really hard. I love the classroom and the creative energy students bring, even mid lockdown! With that in mind, I hope to start workshops very soon for young (and older!) enthusiasts but, for now, I’m working on creating new routines for myself and exploring new ideas.
Bess, 2022
To start the year, I’m returning to my love of graphite, both in drawings and portraits. Colour is creeping in, but in muted tones, alongside lots of detail, of course.
My most recent portrait is of the newest addition to our crew – Bess the Lurcher. She is now 6 months old, great fun and learning (slowly) that when I have a pencil in hand, it’s time for her to snooze.
There are lots of plans afoot but a key date for your diaries is – hopefully - a properly exciting Artweeks show this coming May. We are planning for much-needed time to mill, chat and enjoy both art, food and your company in my studio. David Williams and I will be sharing some of the work we have created throughout the last two years .
More details to follow but here are the dates of the exhibition:
May 14, 15, 18, 20, 21, 22
From 11 – 5 each day
And whilst you are waiting for the show, you can find originals, limited edition prints and cards in my webshop!

A little about me
sue side
The stunning colours in this week’s picture choice capture the spirit of the extraordinary landscapes produced by Oxfordshire artist and art teacher Sue Side.
Based in the village of Cumnor near Oxford, Sue uses graphite and ink to tell the stories hidden in the local environment of tree, copse, land and sky. “My journey to saying ‘I am an artist’ has been a slow one,” says Sue. “I’ve had a pencil and sketchbook in my hand for as long as I can remember and despite choosing the teaching profession as a career, have never stopped creating, learning and creating.
New Cards now Available!
sue side
With the studio remaining closed during the spring months, several of you have been asking about restocking on cards! To make this easy and practical, I’ve created 9 different sets of 4 fantastic cards.
Each card is made individually, with the image mounted on a contrast colour. The card itself is matt white. The cards are either square or long.
I know lots of these cards are seen as little artworks in themselves, nestled on windowsills or favourite shelves. A perfect present too, if you want to share the joy.
Each pack is just £10 + p&p.
So - how do you go about acquiring a set of these mini wonders?!
Simply choose your favourite set (or sets!) and email me with details of where to send them.
sue.side30@gmail.com
I’ll confirm the cost and give you details of how to pay.
You will then receive a wonderful package within a few working days.
The choices are below - so what are you waiting for?!
Set 1 - Etchings (Owl, Hare, Ram + Ewe)
Set 2 - Etchings of Endangered Species
(Hedge, Dormouse, Red Squirrel, Pine Marten
Set 3 - Wood (Green Copse I, Green Copse II, Reaching I, Forest Light)
Set 4 - Wood (Wind Song, Sharing Light, Tall Pines, Signal Elm)
Set 6 - Field (The Dreaming Spires, Field View, Midsummer Meadow, The Ridgeway Copse)
Set 5 - Winter (Winter Roost, Blue Eclipse, Winter Walk, The Bowering Wood)
Set 7 - Bird (Magpie, Crow, Rook, Jackdaw)
Set 8 - Murmuration (Arrival, The Settling, A Summer of Swallows, Autumn Gathering)
Of course, these artworks are available in other forms. A few originals are still available, as are etchings (do check on the website), and if you have a particular favourite, I may have a print available - so just get in touch!

Enjoy the slight return to normality this July

Creating a portrait which reflects the character of the individual is always a challenge I relish – creating one for this particular project, even more so.

Normally at this time of year I'd be getting the studio ready for Oxfordshire Artweeks but this year the whole festival has gone VIRTUAL due to the Covid19 Pandemic.
